Borrowing

How many books can I borrow:

  • Hallam students can borrow up to 25 books.
  • Hallam staff members and research staff can borrow up to 35 books.
  • Associate Members can view there borrowing entitlements on the membership page

How Long can I borrow a book for:

  • The initial loan period for a book is one week.
  • Part-time students, distance learner students, students on learning contracts can get an extended loan of 2 weeks.
  • Books will automatically renew every week upto the maximum loan period unless requested by another user.
  • Then the maximum loan period for students is 52 weeks and associate members is 46 weeks.

 

How to borrow a book from the library

To borrow you will need:

  • Your active SHU card
  • Ensure your library account does not have outstanding fees greater than £30.
  • The library has a mixture of Week loan and reference books, make sure the book you want to borrow is not a reference book. 

 

How to borrow an item from the library:

  1. Use library search to find the location of the book you want to borrow
  2. Take the book to the self service issuing machines located on Adsetts level 4 or Collegiate ground floor and level 1.
  3. Scan your SHUcard over the SHUcard imagine on the bottom right corner of the screen. 
  4. Place your book under the scanner. 
  5. The title of the book will appear on the screen. A clock face will appear while the item is being processed.
  6. Wait until the green tick appears. 
  7. Click 'Finish'
  8. Choose if you want a paper or email receipt
  9. Please remember to log out of your account after borrowing a book so other library users don’t borrow items on your account accidentally. 
  10. You can then take the book out of the library. 

We will contact you on your university email if your book hasn’t been renewed and needs returning.
